R.H. QUAYTMAN: INDEX, CHAPTER 20
NOVEMBER 27, 2010-APRIL 3, 2011
In her work of the last decade, R.H. Quaytman has explored the proposition that a painting can both illustrate particular experiences of the world and embody them.
She challenges expectations about what constitutes a painting proper by borrowing productive techniques and visual vocabularies from sculpture, photography, drawing, printmaking, and book design.
Her paintings also engage philosophical debates about such subjects as mortality, the limits of representation, and the relationship between light and truth.
This exhibition will be the first survey of Quaytman’s mature project, which has evolved to include thirteen interrelated but topically distinct groups of paintings she has organized as “chapters” in her own meta-narrative.
She will also debut a compelling new chapter, one inspired by the architectural spaces, collections, and institutional history of the Neuberger Museum of Art.
The exhibition is organized by Neuberger Museum Director Thom Collins.
