TOBIAS PUTRIH:
QUASI-RANDOM
This survey exhibition covers the rich first decade of sculpture, drawing, performance and video work produced by emerging Slovenian artist Tobias Putrih.
Over fifty mesmerizing works by Tobias Putrih inaugurate the Museumís new series offering younger artists their first survey exhibitions and publications.
Quasi-Random covers this Slovenian artistís rich oeuvre, inspired by his childhood experience of and subsequent critical meditation on Soviet-style social utopianism in the former Yugoslavia. His art explores the promises and failures of such powerful cultural practices as the experimental cinema, modernist architecture and design, and the positivist natural and social sciences.
Putrihís investigations are realized in sculptural projects that are frequently produced through obsessive processes involving the transformation of such mundane materials as Styrofoam, packing tape, cardboard, and twist ties. They are molded into the thought-provoking and aesthetically compelling objects that the New York Times art critic Michael Kimmelman described as possessing an ďarchitectural magnificence.Ē
Visitors will encounter the interactive installation Mudam Studio†in the Museumís lobby; the Theater Gallery will hold more than fifty works; and the Dolly Maass Gallery, School of Art Design, Purchase College will feature the participatory Baltimore Project.

Tobias Putrih: Quasi-Random†is on view September 30, 2007-January 6, 2008.
